When Volkmar Kubitzki found in an DR archive the official data of a 1945/46 performed counting of all locomotives in Eastern Germany, he had the idea to publish this most interesting document. Some years before something similar had been published by the EK-Verlag on the locomotives in Western Germany in 1950, so now we had the chance to fill the still existing gap for the eastern part of Germany.

So our first step was to type all the data into the computer and to compare the data with the already known information. There we found that lots of locomotives were missing in the official documents which definetely came into the DR stock. Now the real hard work began, the completition of the locomotive list by checking all other official information from this time period that were available (e.g. lists of foreign locomotives, notes about scrapping or statistical news "St10a"). To be able to distinguish between these different sources, all added locomotives were written in italic.

The next step was to find a publisher. Ludger Kenning decided to take the risk to publish a pure statistical book in his publishing house. So everyone was quite happy that all books were sold after a few month, so it was decided to start working on a revised edition.

As all known corrections to the first edition were included in the second edition, these corrections are not seperately published on this side. All further information and text extracts are also from the second edition.
